"Good Guys" Discount

Meg showed Cliff and I a flyer from her netball team for
a fund raiser offerd by the Good Guys. Last Wednesday
night they had the Traralgon shop opened from 6 p.m till
9 p.m. to buy goods at a discount with some of the money
going to the club.

I had no money nor did I need anything.

Meg and Donald went and Meg bought a set HD box for the
T.V. in her bedroom.

Cliff said he didn't need anything but as Ross had been
talking about buying a new T.V. so he could get the new
channels when the man installs the new antennas on Cliff's
house, Cliff offered to take him down.

But Ross said that he was too tired and couln't be bothered.
Which of course annoyed Cliff as Ross then stayed up to past
11 p.m. playing on the computer.

To add insult to injury Ross went down on Sat and bought a
new T.V. from the Good Guys paying over $1,700 for it. I
wonder how much he would have saved getting it on the
Wednesday night! More money than sense especially as he put
it on his credit card!!!

T.V. Again

Strange that the new stations Go (part of the nine network)
and 7Two (part of the 7 network) now have better programs
that the main channels. I guess it is because it is Summer
time break in the American film indudtry so the main channels
will have crap for the next two months.

But these new channels are no better at keeping to the program
times that the main channels. Am I the onlyperson who is
bothered by the fact that the channels changetimes and programs
at a whim?

Am I making mountains out of molehills? Is it because I have
too much time on my hands?

Well I think it bothers me because I don't have a great deal
of time and I hate to have what little leisure time I have
wasted by all the faults in the programing timetables.

Saturday Dinner

Karen Roberts asked if Cliff and I could look after
Maddy on Saturday as she and Chris were going to a
dinner in Dandenong.

The boys were each farmed out to different people.

So she and I had a girlie night and Saturday. We
went down to Video Eazy and got two DVD's. Who
should we see pulling out from the car park but
Tracey, Karen's twin sister who had Sam for the
night.

She had just dropped off Maddy at Cliff's and like
us gone straight down to get a DVD.

We wanted the "Tooth Fairy' but there were no copies
left. Turned out that Tracey had taken the last one.

We got "Where the Wild Things Are" instead. I was
disappointed with it. The book was so much better.

We also watched "Alvin and the Chopmunks: The
Squeak?? The title itself is funny! It was a light
comedy just like the first one not too much thought
involved, but it does point out the fact that all
that glitters is not gold.

Beryl came around and watched the "Wild Things".
The best part about it was the lovely beach setting
Beryl thought it looked like '90 mile Beach' and as
it was made in Victoria that is more than likely.

Yusuf Cat Stevens

Cliff took me (and of course Ross) to see Cat
Stevens at the Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday
16th June. He had tried to get into the
Friday night concert but it had sold out within
an hour!

He was suppose to pick me up at 5 p.m. but
arrived at 5.40 p.m. and it was bloody cold
sitting on the front verandah for 40 minutes!

The drive thankfully was just on 2 hours but
he had to park at the MCG and walk the two
kilometers back to the arena, but he did drop
me off first, but the walk back after the concert
nearly killed me!

The songs and music were great but we were in
the nose bleed section. I could see a number
of figures on stage, and just make out which one
was singing, but that was it. Thankfully they put
up the video of him on the side of the stage
otherwise I would have had no idea what he looked
like!

Going in was a nightmare. They had people going
through ladies bags. A man with a magnetic wand
frisking all the men who did not seem to be carrying
anything. They took all cans and even bottled water.

Lucky I did not bring my water this time.

A small plastic cup of beer cost $7:50 and a small
cup of wine $7 and a large cup of lemonade $4.

I bought a T shirt for Cliff and myself and a program
total cost $120! The tickets were $140 each!

Cliff complained that it cost $50 for a three course
meal and a night at the R.S.L. for both of us and I
said Wednesday night cost us $200 each. But he said
that it was a once in a lifetime thing and I joked
well once in every 36 years as that was how long it
had been since Cat Stevens had last been in Australia!

Trouble

I thought it would be a good thing to have a new tenent
in the Yallourn North house.

It has cost $260 to have the grass cut and all the
rubbish taken away that the last tenents left over
the lawn. It cost $245 for the excess water when
they ran over the front tap as a parting shot. It
cost $269.50 to have said tap replaced.

Now it is costing me $1,760 to replace the water
service, which of course is not covered by insurance.

But as I have yet to put the claim in I will not have
the money to pay the bills for awhile and the fence
bloke will be putting the new fence in my share over
$1,100 in the next two weeks!

Thankfully the plummer for the water service will take
a $1,000 for the heater and the reminder in two payments
four weeks apart. Which will ease the burden on me as
I am only receiving $500 a fortnight!

"Who Says I Can't"

I have just finished reading this memoir by Catherine
DeVrye an ex Canadian now an citizen of Australia.

To say that I was angry is an understatement.

She wrote that she was 'abandoned' as a baby when in
reality her birth mother like thousands of other
single mothers of the time gave her up for adoption.
Perhaps this was just hype to sell the book but it
is repeated in the main text.

I too was adopted, a year before her (1949), but
unlike her mother, my mother was forced to give me up
by a goverment authority. As she was a paraplegic in
a state run hospital.

DeVrye lamented the fact that her father died when she
was 21 and the following year she lost her mother.

At least she had a mother! Even if like many mother
daughters of all eras they fought! My adopted mother
died when I was 12!

She had no brother or sisters, well BOO HOO neither did
I! As my mother gave birth to still born boy twins in
1956. There were no more children after this. Although
I had never seen my brothers I often think of what they
would have been like as the years passed. I even believed
that given a choice my father would have preferred me to
have died and the boys to have lived!

Imagine growing up thinking that. Believing that your
father didn't love you that much. Especially after my
mother died and within 8 months marrying a woman that
made Hansel and Gretal's stepmother and Sleeping Beauty's
stepmother look like saints.

The only mother I had ever know. The woman who loved
and adored me was gone replaced by someone who in that
first year informed me that "You were never part of the
bargain."

DeVrye wrote that the grandfather she adored died when
she was a teenager. The only grandfather I had was in
Ireland and althoguh he wrote wonderful letters to me,
we never met, as he died before I ever got to Ireland.
This was because when I was 16 my dad wanted us all to
go to Ireland to meet his family but my stepmother said
that if he took me then she would not go and when he
came home he would find her gone. So they went alone.
My grandfather died seven years later. Three years after
I qualified as a primary school teacher earning the amount
of $49 a week.

My maternal grandmother died in November 1963 less than
18 months after her daughter. She was the only grandmother
I had as my dad's mother had died many years before I was
even born.

My dad was virtual dead to me the moment he remarried as
my step mother never gave us one moment alone together.

After I moved to Victoria he would write me letters. This
he did when his wife attended her weekly two hour craft
sessions. She knew he wrote but was annoyed if he did
it when she was there as that was her time! He often
included money in his letters and he would say each time
not to mention the money in my return letter but to say a
specific phase and then he would know that I had received
it safely. Each time the phase was different it was like
being spy!

So don't tell me Catherine DeVrye's life was that unusual!

Why she is famous is not because of all the things she has
done
Golfing at ST. Andrews
Playing gridiron at the home ground of the Dallas Cowboys
Walking the Great wall of China (which by the way is one
of the thing I would like to do!)
Walking in Colorado's Grand Cayon
Elephant rides in the jungles of Thailand
Scaling Aztec ruins in Mexico
Riding over the Andes on a push bike
Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, many rich people do things like
this! no it is because she has done them working for Sports and
Recreation Australia and working for IBM. She broke the so
called glass ceiling and that is why she is famous!

She admits that she often was in the right place at the
right time and it is true. She was blessed with luck.
Yet she bemoans that there is no man in her life and that
she has no children.

She married the wrong man and though they were married
for 8 years there was never any children as she realised
early on that as a couple they had serious problems and
she felt that children might not help.

She never remarried but that was because she was making a
choice, her career came first and that she has made a
success of.

She says that others have told her she is a role model and
I was appalled at that. She is so old hat! A role model in
the 70's perhaps but not for now. She sends the message
that to be a successful carrer woman you have to coose.
Either a husband and family or a career.

Woman should be learning that they, like an successful
business man, should be allowed to have it all.

Mediation

Beacuse I was so slack in contacting Hailey re the
fence between our yards she took the problem to
mediation.

I had to waste an hour stating things and talking
about the quote from the new fenencer saying that
because of the attitude of Saulty I did not want
to deal with him.

That will teach me if I had picked up the phone
and taken five minutes to speak to her at the
time when she sent the registered letter than
I would have saved an hour on today!

Lap Banding

Well thre last time I saw Mr. Arthur was in 2006
and he said that I had to go away and make an effort
to lose weight naturally. So I tried eating healthy
for two years and gained 8 kgs. So I joined Curves
andadjusted my eating patterns.

In the two years I was with Curves I lost centimeters
from various areas of my body, but I actually gained
weight of 10 kgs from 98 to 108. They kept saying
that was because I was building muscle and it weighs
more than fat, but I am still heavy and my back and
legs are giving out. They were becoming so painful
that I had to leave Curves and in the six months
since I left Curves I think I have gained another
5 kgs!!

But the really bad news is that before the lap
banding operation was at Latrobe Valley Hospital
and cost $5000 but now it has to be done through
Maryvale Private Hospital and the cost is closer
to $10,000. He said that the only way they will
allow me to have it is if I am with a private Health
fund. That will cost about $10-15 a week for at least
9 months and who knows how much longer because of the
waiting list! Even then they only pay about 70% of
the cost so I would still be up for about $3000.

I feel that I am reaching for a golden ring and it
is getting futher and further beyond my reach!
