Irresistible

A bloody good Aussie film. I have not enjoyed an Aussie film since "Strange Bedfellows." I usually go for the comedies but "Irresistible" was a drama.

Unfortunately they tried to play cute with it and give it a twist in the tail ending and ruined it. Why?

Because they got it wrong!!

We are lead to believe that Mara is the daughter of Sophia. Mara was raised in a home. There is a letter from the government agency addressed to Mara telling her that her 'real' mother does not want to see her. There is also a birth certificate with Sophia' s name and particulars on it.

Then in the very end of the film we see Mara recalling her days at the home playing with her best friend Kate. Kate looks exactly like Sophia's youngest daughter Elle. We hear Kate say that whatever is hers is Mara's. Thus we are to suppose that Mara is NOT the daughter of Sophia but that Kate was.

Now I was adopted and to apply for your real certifcate requires three forms of identification. If Mara gave Kate's details but used her own name there would be no record of such a person. If she used Kate's name why was the letter adressed to MARA? They would not send her someone else's certificate.

The only thing I can thing of is that she somehow got Kate's birth certificate from Kate's belongings after Kath died. Also that she herself applied to find her mother and was refused and she keeps Kath's certificate with her letter. Stange behaviour why wouldn't she keep her own certificate with the letter? There was also an underlying suggestion that the refusal of Sophia to see Kath was the reason that Kate went to a War Zone and thus was killed. But the refusal letter was addressed to MARA! not Kath! though they were the dates that Kate went overseas.
